To enable building occupants to shelter in place during episodic outdoor ambient air quality events, to provide healthy indoor environments during respiratory disease outbreaks, and to provide thermal safety during power outages.

Design the HVAC system to include a management mode for episodic outdoor ambient conditions such as wildfire smoke, dust storms, or smog. This mode must be able to isolate the building from outdoor air, recirculate indoor air through enhanced filtration, and maintain pressure differentials if needed to prevent infiltration.
Design the HVAC system to include a management mode for respiratory disease outbreaks. This requires the ability to deliver, at a minimum, the equivalent of the equivalent clean airflow requirements for infection risk management mode in ASHRAE Standard 241-2023, Section 5, for each space or zone of spaces. The system must be able to deliver this same level of clean airflow while maintaining all other performance criteria set forth in ASHRAE 62.1-2022.
Using either energy modeling or passive survivability analysis, demonstrate that the building's indoor temperature in at least one designated shelter-in-place area (accessible to all occupants) will remain at or below the passive habitability thresholds, as defined in ANSI/CAN/UL 7004 — Resilience Evaluation of Commercial Buildings, Structures, and Campuses, for a period of 1 year for the TMY3 data before documentation submission. Alternatively, demonstrate compliance with ANSI/CAN/UL 7004 Section 6.1.4 for passive thermal resilience.

Provide operable windows for at least 50% (for 1 point) of all individual occupant spaces, or 75% (for 2 points) of all individual occupant spaces. Operable windows must provide at least 4% of the net occupiable floor area in openable window area. Windows must be accessible and operable by occupants. Provide insect screens on all operable windows.
