6.6 Rainwater Management

English(英文原文)中文(中文翻译)
Rainwater management refers to managing stormwater runoff on a project site. Stormwater is water from rain or snowmelt. When rain falls on a natural, undeveloped landscape, much of the water is absorbed into the ground. Some of it is also absorbed by plants or evaporates. But in developed areas, impervious surfaces like roads, sidewalks, and rooftops prevent water from being absorbed. Stormwater becomes runoff, flowing over these surfaces and often picking up pollutants as it goes.
Green Building Strategies
Green buildings manage rainwater on site by reducing impervious surfaces and using natural or constructed systems that mimic natural processes. These systems are often referred to as green infrastructure. They include rain gardens, bioswales, permeable pavements, and green roofs. By managing rainwater where it falls, these strategies reduce the volume and speed of runoff, filter pollutants, recharge groundwater, and reduce the burden on municipal stormwater systems.
Common green infrastructure strategies include:
• Rain gardens: Shallow, vegetated depressions that capture and absorb runoff from rooftops, driveways, and other hard surfaces.•
• Bioswales: Linear, vegetated channels designed to convey, treat, and infiltrate stormwater runoff.•
• Permeable pavements: Paving systems that allow water to pass through the surface into the ground below.•
• Green roofs: Roofs covered with vegetation that absorb rainfall, reduce runoff, provide insulation, and create habitat.•
• Cisterns and rain barrels: Storage systems that capture rainwater from rooftops for later use, such as irrigation.•
Implementing rainwater management not only reduces the environmental impact of stormwater but also contributes to LEED credits related to water efficiency and sustainable sites. Effective management of rainwater is increasingly important as climate change intensifies storm events, leading to more frequent and severe flooding in many regions.
